Smoked Havarti, Caramelized Onions & Fig Jam Grilled Cheese

This grilled cheese. I mean, first off, cheese and bread in itself is one of the best inventions ever created. Grilled on a warm griddle with butter, I mean, c’mon! But, I took this grilled cheese to a whole new level, and even though I just made it this afternoon, I am tempted to go right back in that kitchen and make it again for dinner.

The ingredients I chose to make this amazing grilled cheese were a work of art. This grilled cheese was creamy, crunchy, savory, smoky and just a bit of sweetness. Oh man, I am literally drooling just thinking about eating it.

As I was taste testing my creation, it was so good that I couldn’t just enjoy this myself, I called my brother over right away to help me enjoy this masterpiece. He didn’t understand the urgency to rush over for just a grilled cheese until he tasted it. He said he would never doubt me again when I say to get over here and eat what I just made!

The start of an excellent grilled cheese is  to have a good cheese. I used a smokey havarti from Arla Dofino. Arla Dofino cheeses are naturally good from farm to fridge. The cheese is free of added hormones, artificial flavors and preservatives, and crafted with quality, natural ingredients. This cheese was perfectly smoky and beyond creamy. Just cutting it into pieces I knew it would melt well. And as you can see from the photos, it melted perfectly.

I then needed a good hearty bread and chose Saaa-Wheat from Eureka! Organic Bread. I love nuts and that it wasn’t just a traditional white boring bread. This bread has substance and heart. Delicious, organic bread bursting with rich flavor and chewy goodness. Available in three varieties:

• Grainiac
• Saaa-Wheat
• Seeds The Day

I wanted to beef up my sandwich and I knew the perfect accompaniment would be some caramelized onions and fig jam. I was right. Holy cow!

Smokey Havarti, Caramelized Onions & Fig Jam Grilled Cheese

Ingredients

  • 2 slices Eureka! Organic Bread
  • Thin slices of Smokey Havarti Arla Dorfino cheese
  • 1/2 onion sliced thin
  • 2 tbsp fig jam
  • 3 tbsp softened butter

Instructions

  1. In a small frying pan, add 1 tbsp butter and sliced onions. Cook on med-low heat cook until softened and lightly browned while stirring occasionally. Cook about 20 - 25 minutes. Set aside. Butter one side of each piece of bread. Add cheese slices to the other side of the bread until covered(opposite of the buttered side).
  2. On one slice of the bread, spread the fig jam over the cheese. On the other slice, spread the onions over the cheese.
  3. Place the slices of bread (buttered side down) in the pan on medium low and cover with a lid. It only takes a minute or two for the bread toast and the cheese to melt. Once bread is browned, take out of pan on a plate and put sandwich together. Cut in half and serve.

Unbelievably delicious! Great flavour combination… the havarti is a great compliment to the sweetness of the fig jam. Thank you!
