I love BBQs! I honestly do. In spite of my vehement hatred of almost everything summer, BBQs are the one thing I actually look forward to in warm weather.
I adore the idea of gathering around a big picnic table with friends and family, an array of grilled food before me, beckoning me to indulge in at least one of everything.
There are some days, however, when you want the feel of a summer BBQ without the hassle, and these Bacon-Wrapped Summer BBQ Hot Dogs are an amazing solution for those days!
This idea actually came to me while strolling down memory lane, to a trip to Blue Springs a few years ago with a couple of friends. We had picked up everything we needed for the best grilled burgers, and in the process of switching cars, totally forgot a bag…the one that contained the aluminum foil for the charred, overused public grill. As well as the paper goods. And the buns.
Surprisingly, we weren’t deterred. Our menu was slightly adjusted, and thanks to the goodwill of a stranger, we scored some foil and napkins and happily enjoyed a gluten-free burger lunch.
That memory got me to thinking about how lazy summer dinners can be, and how sometimes you want something quick, that you can eat with just your hands.
These simple hot dogs take care of that issue. By garnishing the hot dog with the coleslaw and baked beans, you essentially eliminate the need for a fork and a plate.
Unless you’re a food purist, and eat one thing on your plate at a time, these babies are the perfect lazy summer dinner. Plus, you can have them ready in less than 10 minutes!
Score for quick food that everyone will love!
Ingredients
- 1 (or 2 or 6) of your favorite hot dogs
- 2 slices precooked bacon
- Sweet coleslaw
- Spicy baked beans
- Hot dog buns
- Ketchup, mustard, relish, cheese, or any other condiments you desire
Instructions
- Lightly core the hot dogs with a knife, which will prevent them from bursting in the oven. Then, carefully wrap the hot dogs with the precooked bacon slices, securing with toothpicks if needed (the bacon can be kind of squirrelly to get on there.)
- Bake hot dogs in toaster oven set to convection bake for about 5 minutes, or a regular oven set to 350 degrees for about 8-10 minutes. Any longer and you risk burning the bacon!
- Toast the buns if you want to (I do), then nestle the dogs inside and top with the coleslaw and baked beans, and any other condiments you like. Serve with fries or potato chips and enjoy!
