Reindeer Puppy Chow

December 3, 2014 By Madison Wetherill 2 Comments

Ever since it was acceptable to think about Christmas, I’ve been dreaming of powdery, sugary, chocolately puppy chow goodness. Truth, I’ve never had it before! But this Christmas I was ready to make it and finally move beyond never having it. And I’m so glad that I did!

If you’ve never had puppy chow like me, skip the standard puppy chow and go straight for this reindeer version because the addition of festive M&M’s is just perfect. There is just enough crunch between the Chex and M&M’s.

Sometimes Christmas treats can be a little overwhelming with sweetness but to me, this reindeer chow is the perfect blend! A lot of recipes call for a lot more powdered sugar, but I love the way you can still taste all of the flavors involved in this tasty recipe.

This is the easiest recipe to throw together when you find out you have a holiday party that you didn’t prep for! In under 30 minutes you’ll have a party size snack ready to go!

Reindeer Puppy Chow

Ingredients

  • 14 cups Chex cereal
  • 18 oz holiday m&ms
  • 12 oz semi sweet chocolate, bar or chips
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup peanut butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Melt the peanut butter and butter in a microwave safe dish.
  2. Microwave in 30 second intervals until butter is melted.
  3. Add the chocolate a little at a time until all is melted into the mix.
  4. Microwave one last time to make sure everything is melted, if necessary, and add the vanilla. Stir together.
  5. In a large bowl add half of the cereal.
  6. Drizzle half of the chocolate peanut butter mixture into the cereal in the bowl. Mix with a spoon.
  7. Add cereal mix to a large ziplock bag or storage container.
  8. Add ½ cup of the powdered sugar.
  9. Close tightly and shake vigorously.
  10. Add another 1/2 powdered sugar and toss if needed until all the cereal is coated.
  11. Add ¼ of the m&ms into the bag and toss. Place in an air tight container.
  12. Continue with second half of ingredients.
  13. Keep stored in an air tight container.

Oh man. I desperately want some of this now, and I absolutely ADORE puppy chow! Never had a Christmas-themed one, though, so that’s pretty awesome!

I’ve always dreamt of powdery snow for Christmastime, but we’ve never had it. And the one year that it snowed in Dallas on Christmas Day, we were elsewhere! Maybe this year…
