Copy-Cat Krispy Kreme Recipe

Krispy Kreme was popping up all over cities about 10 years ago, but since then, many of them have closed, and it is not as easy to get those melt in your mouth treats. Those doughnuts right out of the oven could not be beat. So if you miss those doughnuts, then here is a recipe that is a great copycat doughnut that is so good. If you don’t have a deep fryer, or you’re too nervous to fry them in a pot, you can also fry these puppies in a shallow frying pan with some oil.

If you do have a Krispy Kreme shop near you, a great thing that they do for kids is give a free doughnut for every ‘A’ that your child receives on their report card!


Fun Fact about the doughnut: American captain Hanson Gregory came up with the ring-shaped doughnut on his ship in 1847. Tired of the raw centers of regular doughnuts, he cut out a hole with a tin pepper box before frying.


So let’s get to the recipe for some delish doughnuts.

Krispy Kreme Copycat Doughnuts


Copy Cat Krispy Kreme Recipe

Ingredients

    For the Dough
  • 2 (1/4 ounce) packages yeast
  • 1/4 cup water (105-115)
  • 1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk (scalded, then cooled)
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/3 cup shortening
  • 5 cups all-purpose flour
  • canola oil
  • For the Glaze
  • 1/3 cup butter
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 4 -6 tablespoons hot water

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water in 2 1/2-quart bowl. Add milk, sugar, salt, eggs, shortening and 2 cups flour. Beat on low for 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Stir in remaining flour until smooth. Cover and let rise until double, 50-60 minutes. (Dough is ready when indentation remains when touched.) Turn dough onto floured surface; roll around lightly to coat with flour. Gently roll dough 1/2-inch thick with floured rolling pin. Cut with floured doughnut cutter. Cover and let rise until double, 30-40 minutes.
  2. Heat vegetable oil in deep fryer to 350°. Slide doughnuts into hot oil with wide spatula. Turn doughnuts as they rise to the surface. Fry until golden brown, about 1 minute on each side. Remove carefully from oil (do not prick surface); drain. Dip the doughnuts into creamy glaze set on rack.

  4. Heat butter until melted. Remove from heat. Stir in powdered sugar and vanilla until smooth. Stir in water, 1 tablespoon at a time, until desired consistency.

      I made 24 and some doughnut holes. Don’t waste your time on doughnuts holes they are too difficult to turn and cook on both side. I had to flatten mine to deal with the frustration of not cooking both sides and one side burnt. Total disappointment. Do not waste your time on this recipe.

  3. I have tried Krispykreme donuts about 10 times and fell in love with their delicious, light and fluffy donuts and was a little sceptical when I saw your recipe but decided to try it. When I tried my first donut, I could not believe how delicious it was, and almost exactly like krispKreme’s donuts!!! Thank you for this recipe!

  4. I just made these “donuts”.. I had to leave a review. These do not taste like krispy kreme donuts. They taste more like a funnel cake, but soft and more cake like. I followed this recipe to a tea and am truly disappointed. I have had krispy kreme donuts several times, this was no where close.

  5. I’ve tried numerous recipes for doughnuts but this one is the best ever. They are so good i make a dozen at a time and freeze them. Pop one in microwave oven on de-ice for 1 minute perfect everytime. THANKS FOR RECIPE.

    I’ve tried this recipe and my doughnuts came out really dense. However when I added water to my yeast, the water was too hot. As a result I ended up not activating the yeast cause the water was too hot. My fault… I will try again and this time I will add more sugar to the dough recipe and warm water instead of hot water. The glaze was on point though.

      I use to have the same problem with anything I made yeast with. Now what I do is just take the thermometer that you use for the turkey and then keep in the water until it’s around 100 F.

    My grandaughter help me make these today…light, fluffy, crispy, and delicious. All my boxes checked! The glaze was yummy. My grandaughter thought to add coco powder only top dip the doughnuts

    I tried the recipe followed each step and I am sorry this recipe is not a copycat recipe. The doughnuts were dry and I was truly disappointed because the time and effort that was spent on this recipe. The picture posted is a picture of the real Krispie Kreme doughnuts. If you share a recipe with others and is proud of what you accomplished why not share a picture of it as well for all to see. I couldn’t upload the photo I took of what I made today but it does not taste, look, or compare to a Authentic Krispy Kreme.

  14. I just tried making this recipe,and followed it step by step I wasn’t able to finish it cause it was so sticky after I let it sit for an hour. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME ON THIS!!!

  15. Use pioneer woman recipe. Same ingredients different directions have not cooked them yet because they are suppose to refirdgarte to rise over night. But dough cake out amazing and everything looked as directions said it would , I will update with picture and how they taste in the am!
