I love family recipes. I love to make my grandmother recipes. However, usually they take a bit of time, and I don’t have too much time to spend in the kitchen. However, myself and my family still want a meal that tastes like it was homemade, and that is why I love these quick skillet meatballs with Ragu sauce. The sauce is homemade from a family recipe in Naples, Italy, so they have done half the work for me already!
These meatballs are so good, they take just minutes to make and my family loves them. I like to eat them on spaghetti, on a meatball sub, or I just love eating them in the Ragu sauce by themselves.
The founder Assunta Cantisano was born in Naples, Italy and settled in Rochester, New York in 1914. During the great depression she needed to feed her family. She decided to plant a tomato garden to make the sauces from her family recipe of Naples, Italy. The neighbors got wind of how delicious it was and wanted some, so she started selling jars of her infamous sauce from her front porch to help support her family. It became so popular, she started the Ragu packing company and Ragu has been a success ever since.
You can read more about Assunta Cantisano and her story here. The founder of Ragu reminds me of my own grandmother and her homemade recipes.
Ingredients
- 1/2 lb. Italian sausage
- 1/2 lb. ground beef
- 1 cup Italian dried breadcrumbs
- 1 large egg
- ½ yellow onion, finely diced or shredded
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 tsp. pepper
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 jar Ragu Traditional Marinara Sauce
Instructions
- Mix all ingredients into a large bowl. With your hands mix together, but be careful not to overwork. Form the mixture into about 24 ping pong ball sized balls.Heat a large skillet over medium heat. Add the olive oil and tilt the skillet to coat. Add the meatballs and cook until browned on the outside (a couple minutes on each side). Work in two batches if needed to give the meatballs room to move around.
- Add 1/2 jar of Ragu Traditional Marinara sauce (or more if you like it extra saucy) Allow the sauce to come to a simmer, then let the meatballs simmer in the sauce covered for 15 minutes.
